About the instructor

I had the great privilege of growing up in New York City during the 1970s and 80s.  Attending the public school system from elementary through high school was a rich and rewarding experience.  Learning, laughing and living with so many different types of people taught me to appreciate and respect diverse cultures.  After attending the City University of New York [CUNY] I went into private business for 4 years founding a tavern.  After the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and losing 6 good friends [firemen among them] I decided to enlist in the U.S. Army serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan from 2002-3.  After discharge I decided to stay in North Carolina and teach high school social studies.
I've had the honor of teaching at several school districts in North Carolina including Durham, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Guilford and Randolph.  At each stop I learned many valuable lessons from diverse student populations: rural, suburban and semi-urban.  In addition to witnessing creative, experienced teachers hone their craft the input I've received from different administrators and staff development personnel has driven me to become a more reflective and flexible educator.  In 2009 I received National Board Certification validating much of the support and instructional growth I've amassed over the course of my teaching journey.  Currently I'm working toward a Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction at UNCG.  I can't think of anything I'd rather do professionally.  This is my first experience teaching an online course and I am extremely excited about the opportunity to help you learn using the internet as a learning medium.  The constructive feedback of all students is very valuable and important to me so as we proceed throughout the semester and you have suggestions for how to improve the experience feel free to contact me.
